WCA Smart Grid SIG presents: Home Energy Management in the Smart Grid World

May 4th 2010 -- 3:30pm - 6:00pm
Registration & Networking starts 3:30pm, Event from 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue: Palo Alto Research Center, Palo Alto CABookmark and Share

Home Energy bills are expected to increase with Time-Of-Use billing, unless consumers take steps to reduce energy usage during "peak" use times -- normally between noon and 6pm in the summer. TOU Billing is still an option to PG&E customers. The current prohibition on default Time-Of-Use billing for residential customers expires on January 1st 2016, and meanwhile California energy providers are authorized to offer optional TOU billing and demand response programs to residential consumers. Now that the CPUC has ruled that the major California utilities must give the consumer access to their usage data in near real time by 2012, the business opportunities to sell wireless Home Energy Management (HEM) devices, systems, and services are creating intense excitement and rapid innovation.

Join this distinguished panel of experts and innovators to learn what the HEM architecture of the next three years will look like. The topics to be addressed include:

  • How will power monitors, switches, controllers, displays, and Home Area Network (HAN) devices interact with each other, with service provider web portals, and with the Home Energy Gateway to the AMI infrastructure?
  • How will energy consumption, pricing, and load control or demand response data be made available to the consumer?
  • What devices and services might the utilities offer to enhance HEM?
  • What choices for energy management partners or service providers will this present for the consumer?
  • What are the privacy implications of devices that could monitor and report on our energy usage?
