SUMMARY:NRF 2020 Vision
DESCRIPTION:In retail\, vision isn’t something you have\, it’s something you do. A course of action. A plan of attack. A way of working that not only predicts the future\, but creates it – one day at a time. That kind of vision isn’t easy to find\, but this year of all years it’s worth taking a closer look. NRF 2020: Retail’s Big Show. It’s the one place where we all come together to see beyond what is\, to reveal what could be. Plotting a vision for where we’re going by learning from where we’ve been. It’s where visionary talent meets visionary tech. Where big box retailers share out of the box ideas\, and the latest and greatest becomes the here and now.

SUMMARY:TC3 IoT Forum on Smart Home
DESCRIPTION:IoT Forum members meet monthly in Silicon Valley to discover new companies and technologies\, meet partner prospects in person\, review market opportunities across the wide spectrum of connected things\, and deep dive into a specific segment with the help of buyers and experts. This December\, we are focused on innovation in Smart Home. \nSmart Homes used to be ALL about automation\, but increasingly\, this aspect is dropping in relative importance\, being supplanted by “connected”. Often products are sold as “useful as connected devices from the quick-start guide”\, and with operation through a hub or voice assistant. Then\, deeper automation is available via the devices own app\, think of a thermostat as an example. We’ll look at the shifting role of automation in Smart Homes – and the newer ways of programming that. Our meeting will examine how the industry is developing these beachheads to grow into the home.

SUMMARY:ComTech Forum on Edge Computing
DESCRIPTION:Edge Computing is at the peak of its hype cycle\, so it’s important to suss out the hype from the real value that underpins the technology. Edge Computing is an important tool for networks to move applications and services closer to the customers and the data sources. It can potentially improve reliability\, security\, latency\, agility\, core network load\, and performance. Gartner projects that more than half of enterprise data will be produced and processed outside of legacy datacenters\, getting moved closer to the source and the uses. \nThe Telecom Council’s meeting on Edge Computing will have a strong focus on Mobile Edge Compute (MEC)\, since it has such a strong connection to the imminent roll-out of 5G networks. MEC also applies to fixed and 4G networks (Multi-Access Edge Computing)\, often in some mixed combination\, so that’s not off the table\, but the main value proposition of Edge is the lower latency\, and that makes more sense on a super-fast network. Like a Cabernet Sauvignon goes with a Filet Mignon\, MEC pairs extremely well with 5G.

DESCRIPTION:The re-invention of cloud storage has begun.  0Box\, a product from 0Chain\, is a decentralized storage platform to keep your data private\, transparently.  You do not need to trust 0Box to backup your personal data\, family photos and videos\, because you can now validate it yourself.  You can share personal photos knowing that 0Box does not see or control your images\, nor does it monetize them for marketing purposes. No one has access to your data\, except you.  If 0Box is hacked\, there may be service disruption\, but your data remains private. \nIn this Meetup\, Saswata Basu\, CEO of 0Chain\, a distributed ledger company\, will discuss how Service Providers can capitalize on a privacy-centric cloud offering\, 0Box\, to reduce churn and increase revenue. 0Box will be available for alphaNet on April 17. Check out https://0chain.net for details.

SUMMARY:WCA's First Tech Talk - The Broadband divide in Rural California
DESCRIPTION:The California Public Utilities Commission has been measuring broadband in California since 2012\, both to inform consumers of their choices in purchasing broadband and to inform decisions by the California Advanced Technology Fund in investing in underserved broadband.\n\nCalSPEED delivers an open source broadband measurement tool\, independent of carriers.  CalSPEED Mobile used this tool to measure and map mobile broadband throughout California from 2012-2017 documenting the growth\, strong variability and persistent rural/urban broadband divide.   CalSPEED Home uses this same measurement tool to assess residential broadband and the WiFi service almost universally used by users.\n\nWe’ll discuss the program and its findings\, first the CalSPEED Mobile broadband measurement program from 2012-2017 and then the CalSPEED Home residential broadband measurement program beginning in 2019.\n\nNovarum’s own research from on the ground residential WiFi surveys in three California cities will add importance to the WiFi measurements from CalSPEED Home.\nGet Ken’s presentation here: New America August 2018

SUMMARY:CES 2019 Debrief
DESCRIPTION:As all foot-weary telecom professionals know\, after your string of meetings back and forth around a tradeshow\, there’s precious little time to actually spend learning what’s hot\, and seeing the most worthwhile on the show floor. That’s why The Telecom Council puts together these roundtable events after large tradeshows – so our members can share what they learned\, what they saw\, and their opinions of the products and companies in the news. \nOur Debrief meetings give members who didn’t go a chance to learn from those who did\, and those who went also get the chance to fill out their notes with things they might have missed. Participation in these debriefs and the Debrief Reports are included in membership.  \nCES 2019 DEBRIEF\nThis month we debrief Consumer Electronics Show 2019. Along with a Debrief Report from our analyst\, our members share what they learned\, what they saw\, and their opinions of the products and companies that made an impression on them at the show.

SUMMARY:IoT Forum on Smart Cities
DESCRIPTION:Cities are growing fast as populations grow\, and more people choose city life over rural options. City living is inherently efficient\, with more people sharing infrastructure\, living in smaller spaces\, driving less and sharing HVAC costs. But the density of population also means that cities are where future investments in efficiency can pay the greatest dividends. That requires cities get smart. \nSmart Cities use various data collection systems and IoT sensors to fill a data lake that can be leveraged to managed assets and resources efficiently. Desirable outcomes can be achieved in real-time or long-term by using the increased information about the city. The National League of Cities reported in 2017 that 66% of US cities are investing in Smart City technology\, noting that the top uses of Smart tech include: \n\nSmart meters for utilities\nIntelligent traffic signals\nE-governance applications\nWi-Fi kiosks\nRadio frequency identification (RFID) sensors in pavement\n…and many more uses by the city and from 3rd party providers\, as well.\n\nNot all cities are alike\, so there is no reproducible plan that should be implemented everywhere. Each town must consider their unique situation\, and things like population density\, available wealth\, and existing infrastructure and services. And while cities may centrally plan a Smart City roadmap\, private companies may simultaneously implement their solutions\, both helping and complicating the picture. Examples include airbnb\, Byrd\, or Uber. Thus\, cities need to grapple with how to interact and collaborate with these private ventures to get the optimal outcomes. \nJoin us as we consider the Smart City\, and hear from a variety of stakeholders from government\, to telco\, to startups. Ideas we expect to cover at our meeting will include: \n\nIoT sensors\nData platforms\nEnergy consumption\, demand management\, smart buildings\nTraffic flow\, connected vehicles\nMobility solutions\, multi-modality\nUse of the z-axis for transport (autonomous flight)\nDeliveries and moving of goods\nSecurity and Public safety\nUbiquitous connectivity & networks\nWho pays\, how? Biz models?\nOpen data\nRadio frequency identification (RFID) sensors in pavement\nPrivacy in a smart city?\n\nNo shortage of hot topics. See you there. \nFEES \nIoT Forum and ComTech Forum Member Registration\, FREE\nNon-Member Registration\, $200\nSpotlight Table\, $500\nPrerevenue Startup discount\, 50% – Contact us for a discount code
