Nokia has been selected to lead a significant European Commission (EC)-backed initiative, the SUSTAIN-6G project. The SUSTAIN-6G initiative, supported by the EC’s Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking, brings together a diverse group of innovators. This partnership, led by Nokia, will investigate 6G’s role in creating technologies that benefit the environment, economy, and society.
Targeting Sustainable Use Cases
Energy Smart Grids
SUSTAIN-6G aims to develop 6G-driven solutions for managing energy demands. The project will evaluate the potential of microgrids powered by 6G, which can utilize AI to control networks in real-time, enhancing energy efficiency.
E-Health Applications
In healthcare, SUSTAIN-6G plans to expand the capabilities of 6G in medical data analysis and telemedicine. Nokia and its partners will explore how 6G infrastructure could facilitate remote health services, benefiting both urban and rural communities.
Sustainable Agriculture
The project will also focus on sustainable agriculture, examining how 6G can support high-bandwidth applications in smart farming. Innovations here include data-driven solutions for telemetry, sensing, and automation to promote efficient agricultural practices.
Leading the Path Toward a Sustainable Future
Peter Merz, Nokia’s VP of Standards, highlighted the importance of the UN Paris Agreement and the need for every sector to contribute to climate solutions. The SUSTAIN-6G project is set to begin in January 2025, with expected completion by 2027, aiming to pave the way for sustainable advancements through 6G technology.
