Qualcomm has acquired Hanoi-based MovianAI, the generative AI division spun out of VinAI. This move underscores Qualcomm’s push to deepen its research and development in artificial intelligence across telecom and connected technologies. The acquisition, announced without a disclosed fee, brings advanced AI capabilities into Qualcomm’s global strategy, particularly across smartphones, vehicles, and IoT solutions.
This strategic move follows Qualcomm’s recent purchase of Edge Impulse, a U.S.-based startup known for its tinyML tools that optimize AI in IoT modules. Combined, the two acquisitions aim to broaden Qualcomm’s AI expertise—from large-scale models to embedded ML applications—offering end-to-end AI solutions across sectors. MovianAI’s founder, Dr. Hung Bui, a former DeepMind scientist, will continue leading the Hanoi team under Qualcomm.
Strengthening Telecom AI Innovation
MovianAI specializes in generative AI, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. These technologies align with the growing telecom demand for intelligent, real-time processing at both device and edge levels. Qualcomm emphasized that the acquisition enhances its AI capabilities, supporting innovation across 5G, IoT, and mobile ecosystems.
Vietnam’s Growing Role in Qualcomm’s R&D
Qualcomm has collaborated with the Vietnamese tech ecosystem for over two decades. By incorporating MovianAI’s “powerhouse” team, the company further invests in Vietnam’s AI talent and infrastructure. This integration boosts local R&D output while contributing globally to Qualcomm’s AI goals.
Synergies with Edge Impulse and Dragonwing
While MovianAI focuses on generative AI models for larger devices, Edge Impulse delivers ML solutions for constrained environments. Together, they position Qualcomm to serve a wider spectrum of telecom and industrial needs. The recent restructuring under Qualcomm’s Dragonwing brand supports this strategy by unifying software, hardware, and services under one scalable AI platform.
Future of Generative AI in Telecom Applications
Qualcomm plans to integrate MovianAI’s research into next-generation products including smartphones, vehicles, and industrial devices. The move is part of Qualcomm’s broader commitment to AI innovation and leadership in global telecom markets. Senior vice president Jilei Hou affirmed that bringing high-level AI talent in-house will help accelerate the next wave of telecom innovation.
