Spanish 5G Satellite Mission Marks New Era for Europe

The Spanish 5G satellite mission moves forward as Sateliot and PLD Space sign a launch agreement. The two companies will deploy two 5G satellites by 2027. Notably, this marks the first fully private space mission led only by Spanish firms.

Under the deal, PLD Space will send two 160-kilogram satellites into low Earth orbit. The companies confirmed the partnership in a joint statement on Tuesday. As a result, Spain strengthens its role in Europe’s growing space economy.

Miura-5 Rocket to Power the Launch

PLD Space will use its Miura-5 rocket for the mission. The two-stage launcher is partially reusable and designed for orbital flights. Moreover, the rocket takes its name from the famous Spanish fighting bull breed.

Europe Pushes for Space Independence

Private rocket companies worldwide plan to deploy thousands of satellites in the coming years. Analysts expect the space sector to reach one trillion dollars by 2030. Therefore, competition continues to grow rapidly.

In the European Union, governments aim to reduce reliance on foreign launch providers. For example, officials want less dependence on SpaceX. Instead, they support local aerospace champions to secure technological sovereignty.

Sateliot Expands Its 5G Vision

Barcelona-based Sateliot seeks to become a major European satellite telecom provider. The company plans to deploy 100 satellites by 2028. In addition, it aims to generate 1 billion euros in revenue by 2030.

Partly state owned defense group Indra holds a 4 percent stake in Sateliot. According to CEO Jaume Sanpera, choosing a Spanish launch partner strengthens European security and defense capabilities. Furthermore, the move enhances global 5G connectivity.

PLD Space Eyes Long-Term Growth

PLD Space completed Europe’s first fully private rocket launch in 2023. Since then, it has expanded its ambitions. Ultimately, the company aims to carry diverse cargo, including astronauts, into space.

As preparations continue toward 2027, Spain positions itself at the center of Europe’s next-generation space infrastructure.
