Qualcomm Acquires Edge Impulse to Strengthen AI and IoT Offerings

Qualcomm Edge Impulse Acquisition

Qualcomm Expands IoT and AI Strategy with Edge Impulse Acquisition

Qualcomm Technologies is acquiring Edge Impulse, a U.S.-based AI and IoT specialist known for its machine learning (ML) tools for microcontrollers. The move aligns with Qualcomm’s broader strategy to integrate hardware, software, and services for scalable IoT solutions. Announced just before Embedded World in Germany, the deal supports Qualcomm’s newly introduced Dragonwing brand, which unifies its IoT portfolio.

The acquisition reinforces Qualcomm’s commitment to AI at the edge, leveraging Edge Impulse’s no-code platform for seamless AI model development and deployment. This follows Qualcomm’s recent purchase of LTE assets from France’s Sequans, further consolidating its IoT leadership.

Strengthening AI at the Edge

Edge Impulse enables developers to create AI-driven IoT applications with minimal coding. Its platform simplifies data collection, model training, and deployment, accelerating the transition from cloud to edge computing. The company supports Dragonwing processors and will expand its compatibility with additional Qualcomm hardware for industrial and embedded applications.

A Strategic Investment in IoT Development

Nakul Duggal, Qualcomm’s general manager for embedded IoT, emphasized that Edge Impulse’s AI-powered tools will enhance Qualcomm’s ability to support developers and enterprises. By integrating AI into IoT, Qualcomm aims to drive digital transformation across industries, including healthcare, logistics, retail, and industrial automation.

Following the acquisition, Edge Impulse will continue operating under its current brand as “Edge Impulse, a Qualcomm company,” maintaining its website and developer support. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.
